Demon Attack in Hupperdook (Recap from 1-20-23)
(Da’Leysen the 5th of Fessuran)The next morning the party went back down to Hupperdook and found a “very” enthusiastic buyer for the Lolth statue, maybe a little too enthusiastic? They sold the statue to the Grimboodle sisters, Deep gnome sisters with some seriously gothic horror vibes, for 50 pp. The Party procured rooms back at The Forest Inn in preparation for the coming festival, looking forward to a seriously good time of relaxation and merry making.
During the stroll through the festival square they happen to see a small device hidden behind a tree near the parameter of the festival square, upon further searching they found 3 more hidden around the festival square. The party alerted the crowns guard to the potential danger. The crowns guard assigned two guards per device to keep citizens away from the devices, as they sent for more reinforcements. Next the glowing runes on the device near the party started blinking then went dark, as the runes went dark the lid popped off a leaded jar on top of the device spewing forth a demon from the jar (a Vrock). Four Vrocks were released, one from each device and immediately attacked anything nearby.
The party jumped into action and attacked, helping the crowns guard as they were hopelessly outmatched. In the fight four crowns guards were killed and three seriously wounded, many citizens were hurt and all were terrified running in panic from the demons appearing in the midst of the festivities. The party won the day and gathered four bundles of feathers and eight talons from the demons who were fast turning to dust.
After helping to carry the dead and wounded crowns guard back to the garrison, Bram once again praised the bravery of the party and asked that they do their best to enjoy the rest of the festival. Returning to the town square, the party sampled the Trostenwald brews at the three noble families tents, the Baumbauch Family Brewery, the Husseldorf Family Brewery, and the von Brandt Family Brewery, all really good trosts. In the Baumbauch tent the party ran into Norda the watchmaster from Trostenwald talking with Starosta Fryda Langer, enjoying a trost. After a brief reunion the watch master paid the outstanding bounty on the scimitars from the dead bandits. She also remarked how there has been a lot less bandit activity since the hucksters started accompanying caravans. In the von Brandt tent the Party found watchmaster Bryce Feelid and Starosta Kosh enjoying the festival. Bryce paid the group the bounty on Gnoll ears they had collected and commended the Hucksters for their service to Alfield.
The party also saw Alice McKinnon, the group mother of the all field orphanage, along with Headmistress Valrali Stormrage, trying to keep track of a large group of children they had escorted to Hupperdook for the festival, in all twenty two children, three to fourteen years old. The children came through the ordeal without any damage and seemed excited and cheerful, happy to be at the festival, (though Alice and Valrali looked a bit frazzled). Taklinn Eversharp rushes out from his small “Good Brew Distillery” tent offering two mugs of ale to Alice and Valrali who accept them gratefully! For four of these children, this will be their last year and they need to find apprenticeships or they will be sent to bladgarten for military service. Three boys all thirteen and a girl fourteen, needing to be placed are currently helping watch over the younger ones in the group.
Upon seeing Abnar and remembering his generosity, Alice made a mental note to talk to him later about the possibility of getting her charges apprenticeship with some master craftsman. She didn't really want to see them going off to battle.
The group saw Udoth having a drink with two cloaked figures, as night falls and massive Fireworks displays lit up the skies, with the sounds of music singing and laughter heard throughout. Once the party was through with the festivities they had soft beds waiting at The Forest Inn, under the care and hospitality of Isomyra Shadowrest and her talented staff.
